The short answer

Each AI engine reads a different map of the internet before it recommends a hotel — and most of that map is not your website. A 13-week analysis of 230,000 prompts and more than 100 million citations found Perplexity’s most-cited domains are led by Reddit, LinkedIn and Microsoft (AEO Vision, June 7, 2026) — while for commercial-intent queries specifically, Perplexity pivots to review aggregators and structured comparison sources: TripAdvisor, Yelp, NerdWallet, PCMag (Profound analysis, cited in 5WPR’s State of AI Citations, May 19, 2026). Google AI Overviews, meanwhile, leans on YouTube more than any other source family (AI Citation Behavior Index, June 30, 2026). And across engines, a single domain — Wikipedia — absorbs 8.9% of all citation slots, with Reddit adding another 11.4% spread across its subreddits (Attrifast, 1,200-prompt study, May 26, 2026).

Prompt intent then swaps the reading list again. For solo-trip hotel prompts, review sites are the top influence on AI answers; for women’s solo travel prompts, safety-focused blogs dominate citations and the word “safe” appears in 73% of responses (Meltwater GenAI Lens, eight LLMs, data February 18 – March 11, 2026, published June 3, 2026).

For hotels, tour operators and DMCs the implication is blunt: optimizing your own site optimizes one province of the map. The engines assemble answers from community threads, review corpora, video and editorial coverage that you do not control — and your presence or absence in those sources decides whether you make the candidate set at all. A model-by-model travel AI audit is how you find out which provinces you actually occupy.

Five engines, five different reading lists

The most common mistake in travel GEO is treating “AI” as one channel. The 2026 citation data says it is at least five, each with distinct retrieval behavior.

Perplexity is the community-and-comparison engine. It cites roughly 21.9 sources per answer — far more than ChatGPT — after decomposing a complex query into broader retrieval passes that pull from many sources at lower individual absorption depth (AI Citation Behavior Index, June 30, 2026; MR Research analysis of 21,143 citations, July 16, 2026). Overall its citations skew to Reddit; on commercial intent it favors structured review and comparison sources like TripAdvisor and Yelp (AEO Vision, June 2026; Profound via 5WPR, May 2026).

Google AI Overviews is the video-plus-stack engine. YouTube dominates its citations, layered over the traditional blue-link stack it evolved from (AI Citation Behavior Index, June 30, 2026). For hotel queries this means property videos, destination guides and walkthrough content carry citation weight they never had in ten blue links — a shift we examined in detail in where clicks go when Google AI Mode answers hotel queries.

ChatGPT cites fewer, higher-authority sources — and interestingly, it is the engine where OTA visibility is weakest: Booking.com appears in just 30% of ChatGPT’s travel responses and Expedia in 20%, versus 89% and 88% on their best engines (Meltwater, June 2026). Less crowded answers mean independent properties have proportionally more room.

Grok is a wildcard amplifier. It tied Booking.com and Expedia for top visibility in travel prompts, but pushed Tripadvisor to 86% visibility — the strongest amplification of any review platform on any engine (Meltwater, June 2026).

The cross-engine baseline is a long tail. Attrifast’s study logged ~51,723 citation events across roughly 8,917 unique domains (May 26, 2026). Even with Wikipedia and Reddit absorbing a fifth of slots, thousands of smaller sites — local blogs, destination guides, niche forums — share the rest. That long tail is where mid-size hotels and operators can realistically win citations.

Prompt intent swaps the reading list

Meltwater’s GenAI Lens ran four structured prompts about spring 2026 European travel across eight engines. The source mix moved with the ask:

  • Luxury prompts drew most heavily on editorial luxury sources.
  • Solo-trip prompts shifted to review sites as the top influence.
  • Women’s solo travel prompts made review platforms and safety-focused blogs the dominant citations, with “safety” rising to 73% visibility — and Tripadvisor jumping to 47% visibility, second-highest of any platform (Meltwater, June 2026).

Tripadvisor, third overall at 32% visibility, became the second-most-visible platform precisely in the prompts where peer evidence mattered most. The same pattern held for destinations: Amsterdam reached 81% visibility in solo-travel context and Lisbon 59%, while Paris dominated luxury prompts at 63% (Meltwater, June 2026).

Read that again as a hotelier: you do not compete in “hotels in Rome.” You compete inside destination-and-intent brackets — “boutique Lisbon solo trip,” “safe hotel Amsterdam solo female” — and each bracket has its own citation diet. A safety blogger’s write-up may influence your next women’s-solo-market booking more than any meta description you write.

The 30-day freshness rule

Perplexity’s real-time index can cite content within hours, and in one 2026 analysis 82% of its citations went to content published within the previous 30 days (Leapd, April 17, 2026). For seasonal travel this is decisive: a Christmas-market page last updated in 2024 is structurally invisible during the exact weeks travelers plan that trip. Fresh, dated, event-specific pages are not a nicety — they are admission tickets to the freshest engine’s answer set.

Why your website alone cannot carry this

Two structural facts close the argument. First, concentration: Booking.com and Expedia appeared in 55% and 54% of AI travel recommendations respectively (Meltwater, June 2026) — the answers route to OTA inventory by default, so an independent property’s fight is for the remaining slots. Second, the selection stage is position-biased: the causal audit we covered in what actually moves AI to recommend your hotel found list position alone shifts recommendations by about $12 per night in price-equivalent terms, and the models’ stated reasons only loosely match their actual behavior (arXiv 2606.16344, June 15, 2026). You cannot ask an AI why it skipped you and trust the answer.

Put together: retrieval decides the shortlist, position bias decides the pick, and citation geography decides retrieval. Your website feeds one input into that machine. The rest of the diet is reviews, communities, editorial and video — earned media you have to occupy deliberately. That is the core of a travel GEO agency engagement: mapping which of those source classes you already appear in, and which you cede to competitors.

The five-step citation-coverage playbook

1. Audit per engine, never averaged. Booking.com’s visibility runs from 30% to 89% depending on the model (Meltwater, June 2026). An averaged “AI visibility score” hides exactly the engines where you are losing. Measure named-engine presence for your destination-intent brackets.

2. Classify who beats you. For each priority prompt, list the cited sources by class: review platform, community/UGC, editorial, video, official/DMO. The class that dominates is the class you must enter — not the one easiest to enter.

3. Win the first-party province properly. Freshness within the 30-day window, structured FAQ content, machine-readable facts, and verified guest reviews hosted on your own domain — Meltwater’s own closing recommendation, since UGC helped Tripadvisor stand apart in specified-intent prompts (June 2026). Your site cannot win the whole map, but it should own its province outright.

4. Earn the third-party classes deliberately. Solo-market hotels: safety and solo-travel bloggers, plus review-platform depth. Luxury: editorial placement. Any property: video for the AI Overviews layer. Tour operators and DMCs: review-platform presence on Tripadvisor/Viator and DMO listings, which act as citation anchors engines already trust.

5. Re-measure monthly, by bracket. Citation shares move — Perplexity’s Tripadvisor strength and Grok’s amplification are engine quirks, not laws. A standing measurement cadence is what separates a program from a snapshot; it is also how AI visibility for hotels is actually run, and what our pricing packages at whatever seriousness you can sustain.

FAQ

What is citation geography in travel GEO? It is the map of sources an AI engine actually retrieves from before answering a travel prompt. Each engine reads a different mix — Perplexity leans on Reddit and review aggregators, Google AI Overviews on YouTube — and the mix shifts again with prompt intent (Meltwater, June 2026). Your citability is decided on that map, not just on your website.

Which sources do AI travel planners cite most? Across engines, Wikipedia holds about 8.9% of citation slots and Reddit about 11.4% across subreddits (Attrifast, May 26, 2026). In travel specifically, OTAs dominate visibility (Booking.com 55%, Expedia 54%), with Tripadvisor third at 32% overall but surging to 47% in luxury and women’s-solo prompts (Meltwater, June 2026).

Does my hotel website content get cited by AI? Yes, but it competes with review corpora, community threads, editorial and video for the same slots — and freshness gates it: one 2026 analysis found 82% of Perplexity citations went to content under 30 days old (Leapd, April 17, 2026). Updated, dated, fact-structured pages get cited; stale ones don’t.

How do I find out which sources AI cites for my hotel? Run the same prompts your guests would, per engine, and record every citation — or use a structured audit. A travel AI audit does this across engines and prompt brackets, showing which source classes carry your market and which carry your competitors'.

Is one AI engine enough to track? No. Booking.com visibility ranges from 30% on ChatGPT to 89% on Meta Llama; Tripadvisor is weak on Claude and ChatGPT but reaches 54% on Perplexity and 86% on Grok (Meltwater, June 2026). Single-engine optimization is a lottery ticket; the citation map is engine-specific by design.
